The Foundation's bodies are the Board of Trustees and the Managing Director (Secretary General), who manages the business of the Foundation and represents it vis-à-vis third parties. The Board of Trustees consists of one chairperson, his/her deputy and six other members. After her husband Peter's death in 1996, Irene Ludwig is the only member for life. The other members are appointed for a term of five years each, with three members nominated by the Federal Minister responsible for the federal museums and three members nominated by Irene Ludwig. They may be re-appointed.

The tasks of the Board of Trustees include, above all, the administration and disposal of the works of art belonging to the Foundation and expanding the collection through annual purchases.
